27th July 2019

The morning’s weather consisted of moderate/strong north-westerly winds and overcast skies, with much lighter winds later. Seawatching highlights included eight Mallard north, 19 Teal south, two Tufted Ducks north, 503 Common Scoters (315 north, 188 south), 91 Manx Shearwaters north, 46 Oystercatchers south, three Whimbrel south, eight Curlew south, a juvenile Mediterranean Gull south, 113 Sandwich Terns south, 19 Common Terns (15 north, four south), nine Arctic Terns (seven north, two south), 13 Lesser Black-backed Gulls south, and two Bonxie moving north.

Thornwick Pools hosted a juvenile Little Ringed Plover, four Dunlin, a Snipe, five Common Sandpipers and three Green Sandpipers; three Greenshank overflew the village. A flock of 200 Swifts fed over the same area. However, one of the day’s highlights related to a single Pied Flycatcher at North Landing; a harbinger of passerine migration and Flamborough’s earliest ever ‘autumn’ record.
