Light southerly winds first thing were eventually replaced by light north-westerlies by evening; sunny intervals predominated with heavy thundery showers by evening and temperatures peaked at 24 degrees C. Seawatching highlights included two Shelduck, 12 Teal, three Scaup, 92 Manx Shearwaters, 366 Oystercatchers, nine Golden Plovers, 14 Whimbrel, ten Bar-tailed Godwits, 19 Turnstone, 89 Knot, an adult Curlew Sandpiper, 42 Sanderling, 93 Dunlin and 23 Redshank flew south. A total of 238 Sandwich Terns moved north and 250 Little Gulls fed offshore. The arrival of the thundery showers late afternoon also prompted the movement of 1600 Swifts south over the Fog Station.
Thornwick Pools attracted 20 Dunlin, along with single Ringed Plover, Little Ringed Plover, Common Sandpiper and a Green Sandpiper. Signs of ‘autumn’ passerine migration included four Willow Warblers and seven Yellow Wagtails.
