August 2026

August proved to be an excellent month for the team, in 43 sessions across the headland an amazing 1312 birds of 44 species were caught, with 1116 of these newly ringed and 196 retraps.

The team at RSPB Bempton cliffs had a wonderful annual Bioblitz weekend with two ringing demonstrations which saw them catch 253 new birds and 62 re-traps alongside showing many visitors birds up close and explaining why we catch and ring birds.
A nice recapture at RSPB Bempton on the 8th of a Willow Warbler, originally ringed as a juvenile at Fontburn Nature Reserve, Northumberland on the 9th July 2026, travelling 165km in 30 days.

The Bempton team had another good day on the 29th when they caught a late Grasshopper Warbler and Seven Pied Flycatcher.

At South Landing a session on the 2nd saw a staggering 182 birds of 19 species caught with 171 of these being new, highlights being 66 Whitethroat, 14 Blackcap, 10 Willow Warbler, seven Sedge Warbler, four Lesser Whitethroat, three Reed Warbler and two Garden Warbler.

The Thornwick roost delivered again with a session on the 23rd delivering 12 House Martins, always the trickiest hirundine to catch, and on the 27th seven Siskin were ringed.

A trial session for dazzling waders at South Landing beach saw the team catch a lone
Oystercatcher!

In between all the ringing the team also managed to carry out some tidying and maintenance of the rides at South Landing.
