Come and meet FBO’s ringing team, see birds up close and discover the secrets of migration that bird ringing is helping to discover.

9am – 1pm in the Discovery Room at the Living Seas Centre
Up to date information on migweek events, bird sightings and find out about the work of FBO. Merchandise for sale including reports, clothing, mugs, badges and books.
Visible Migration drop-in sessions 7.30am – 9.30am
Share the magic of visible migration with Paul Scanlan and his team.
Locations will be announced on the website/social media by 7pm the evening prior (Hunmanby / Flamborough / Bempton).

Walk spaces are limited to 12 attendees – please only book if you plan to attend, and please let us know if you need to cancel.

‘Too far to walk: how and why birds fly south for the winter’
Dr Joe Wynn, University of Liverpool.
‘Fledgling Manx Shearwaters can pinpoint their colonies from the wrong side of the Atlantic. Reed Warblers can navigate to West Africa having never visited previously. A Whinchat can cross the Sahara in a single night, flying at a height of more than 5km. How? The mechanisms birds use to navigate remain one of the least well understood but most exciting facets of long-distance migration. In this talk I’ll cover the mechanisms birds use to navigate, but also the techniques humans have used over the last century to study them. I’ll also touch on my work at FBO, and specifically on how we’re using Yellow-browed Warblers to understand how long-distance migration works.’

‘Visible migration on our doorstep’
Paul Scanlan & Keith Clarkson.
When thinking of bird migration at Flamborough Head and Filey we dream of easterly airflows, of finding that rare drift migrant, of being immersed in a great fall of continental migrants, or of bracing northerlies when we can turn to the sea in the hope of witnessing passing sea duck, skuas, petrels and shearwaters. Even as
night falls we can capture the calls of passing, unseen nocturnal migrants. But what do we do in south westerlies! Some would say sleep! But there is an alternative and here lies the answer – for tonight Paul and Keith will be exploring the visible migration of birds, looking at which species to expect, and how you can increase your chances of seeing and hearing them. Our talk will focus on their experiences in The Peak District and here on the Yorkshire Coast at Flamborough, Filey and of course, Hunmanby Gap!
